And despite a few misplays in the field, the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa high school softball teams waged an epic, fabulous Class A contest on Thursday at the Red Rams home field. by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. Both teams had plenty to be proud about.
Here are a few moments from that contest that mattered:
The long ball
Facing perhaps Section III's best pitcher in Kerri Keeler of J-D, leadoff hitter Danielle Ventrone of ESM was just looking to make contact. Did she ever. Ventrone sent a Keeler fastball flying over the fence in left center field to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
"She's probably the best pitcher I've ever faced in my entire life," Ventrone said. "I just told myself before the game not to be scared and to go up there with confidence. I stayed up in the box because she has movement on the ball. She throws that high fastball pretty well. I stayed off it for the first two pitches. Then 0-2 is kind of my count. I like that. That's where you want to throw a strike. She threw it right where my spot was."
Ventrone knew it was out the second it left the bat. Her coach wasn't so sure and told her to sprint.
"I'm like, that is over the fence. Like, I'm going to jog from here on out," Ventrone said. "It is over the fence. It was a good start to the game, especially against a great team like J-D."
Alyssa Robens of J-D homered to left center. It was her first since the two-run homer she hit against Oneida in last year's sectional championship game. Alexis Cantor of J-D had a long drive clang off the tall fence in left field that protects the junior varsity field and had to settle for a double.
The collision
It was the first game of the season for Jamesville-DeWitt shortstop Maggie Austin. She missed the team's first two games because of commitments with chorus. Austin never made it through the first inning - or even an out.
After Ventrone's homer, ESM's Tiffany Evans reached first. On an attempted steal, Austin went to cover the bag and receive the throw from her catcher. There was a major collision with Evans, whose helmet appeared to catch Austin along her eyebrow. Austin sustained a significant gash above her left eye and headed to the doctor for stitches.
Before she left, Evans ran over to the J-D dugout between innings to check on Austin.
"I felt really bad because it looked really bad," said the ESM player. "I said, sorry and everything. She said, it's fine, like no big deal."

Two-out magic (video)
Jamesville-DeWitt scored one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth - all with two outs. Julia Fairbanks had a two-run single that gave the Red Rams a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
ESM rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the sixth with two outs. The final rally began with a Ventrone single and no one on base. Courtney Lagare delivered a two-run single that tied the game for the Spartans.
The winning run
Emily Clapper is a left-handed hitter who specializes in slap hits. She slapped a stinging single to left starting the winning rally for J-D. But before she would score the winning run, Clapper nearly got picked off first base. Her jersey was covered in brown dirt from the force of her head-first dive
